Poor service from Walsh Western
We ordered a laptop from Dell for a client last week and still haven’t received it, even though it was dispatched from their Coventry depot 3 days ago.
It is just annoying and rude, that we have to chase them up to find out what is going on with the package. The original delay was due to their delivery van breaking down - I found this out from their online system, which isn’t updated in real time, the following day after we had waited all day for the package. All it would have taken is a phone call to us to let us know about the delay - thats we did with our client and they were OK with this.
The problem then got worse by the fact that the driver forgot to load the package the following day for redelivery. Yet again they didn’t inform us of this and their web system didn’t update with this info until the following day and I had to spend 25 minutes on hold to find this out.
The laptop is due to turn up in the next hour so fingers crossed they can deliver it on the third attempt. It is so frustrating when large companies like this mess you around - there is very little that we can do as they have the product that we ordered and there is no way that we can take out business elsewhere. All in all I am completely unhappy with the service, and the £25 we have to pay Dell for the shipping.

I am having the same issue. I bought a new laptop on friday evening, told that it will not get to me in 3 weeks. I’m ok with this because I knew about it even before buying. My surprise on Monday morning is it has been made and shipped. according to the Walsh Western tracker it took only 10 hours from pick up to cross to England. It has been sitting in a warehouse (Hub) for 30 hrs, with no phone call from them to “arrange a convenient delivery time!”. This hub is nowhere near me. I am not holding my breath for a rapid smooth sailing delivery. No doubt dell have gone with the lowest bidder on this as well.
Bob said the following at February 27th, 2008 at 1:47 am :
I forgot to add. When I called them to arrange a drop off, they have one of those stupid computer phone messaging system. When I put in the correct responses it tells me to call Dell for a delivery time!

Same problem - spent 2 whole days being promised delivery by WW and no show - system says ‘customer not home - card left’ but no card and no show - will cancel entire order today from Dell. Dell must get their delivery right - I guess the kit is bouncing around a warehouse/van somewhere in England
Hayley said the following at March 7th, 2008 at 7:37 pm :
I have the same problem my delivery date was Tuesday the 4th of march, I waited in all day and no-one arrived, so i contacted dell and Walsh western and was told it would be delivered on Wednesday.
Again i waited in all day and nothing so i checked the tracking website and it said the customer was not in and the delivery driver posted a card to say he had been. I had received nothing of the sort no knock at the door or card left at my home. So i began to think ok the driver is delivering it to the street next to mine with a similar name all he needs is sat nav.
I contacted both companies via e-mail, since im always put on hold for over 10 minutes. and just got a e-mail from ww saying they’d chase up the problem, But that’s all i got from them for that whole day.
On Thursday i stayed in on the off chance, no one rang me to say there would be a delivery or anything, when i checked track and trace apparently the driver was at my door and had posted another card, well there was nothing at my house again, so now i can say for sure that he’s going to the wrong house, I stated this on my e-mail and called them early Friday morning, sure enough i was on hold for which seemed a lifetime, eventually i got to talk to someone and they said it would be delivered today. Well you guessed it nothing has arrived, and it is truly disgraceful especially when delivery is £51!!!

All I can say is ditto to Hayley, I think Walsh Western have been taken over by some other outfit recently and all their systems have gone to bollocks as I’ve waited in all day waiting for my Dell to arrive… it arrived at my local depot at 9am this morning according to the tracking and is now “on hold” at the depot. Not sure what this means but it’s really annoying and amateur. Dell really ought to get shot of Walsh Western.
Brian said the following at March 14th, 2008 at 3:30 pm :

I am yet another unhappy customer thanks to Western Walsh making me waste a day off work waiting in for a non existant delivery.
I’m not prepared to tolerate this appaling service so I have cancelled my laptop from Dell and told them to blame their courier.
My advice is NOT to chase WW who are experts at evasion and excuses… your contract of sale is with Dell and it is Dells responsibility to fulfill the delivery on time. If enough people remind Dell of this (as I did) they will stop using this useless courier if they want our business.
I’m off to PC world where I can walk out of the door with a laptop and not waste more time waiting in for a useless courier.
Kelly said the following at March 20th, 2008 at 10:57 pm :
Yep me too!
I saw this morning that the Dell website said my order was ‘out for delivery’ - checked up on the Walsh Western tracking link they provided me and it said out for delivery from 7.53am this morning. As the delivery depot is only a few miles from me I cancelled my day and began waiting… and waiting… and waiting. Nothing yet.
What I want to know is how our EXPENSIVE, and invaluable business orders are being stored by these cowboys? Is it a man with a van, so to speak? Are our items safe while they are being stored over night? Why would the depot release them if they arent going to be delivered that day? What the hell are Dell doing charging me £60 for delivery if they cant even be bothered to deliver it?
Whats the point of giving us a tracking number and popping a load of BS on the screen for us to muse over if they arent going to bother delivering anyway?
They better not pull that ‘I left a card’ cr*p with me! I have 24 hour cctv and will gladly submit the tapes to trading standards, Dell and who ever else I can get involved. I didnt even know there was a problem until I read this thread, but obviously these people are total idiots. If it doesnt come tommorow I’ll be going to Tesco - I can get virtually the same machine in their half price sale for £50 less, with clubcard points and better service. At least I know it hasnt been sitting in someones shed for 24 hours.
Disgusted.
No wonder Dell has such a bad reputation lately. They need to step up, become responsible and sort this rubbish out so that customers are truely getting what they are paying for - especially when theres a £60 postage fee involved!

Well I finally got a full refund from Dell, 3 weeks after they took the money from my credit card account despite me cancelling my order and specifically telling them NOT to take any money from it. I had to threaten them with a County Court summons to get it mind and even then they only left 1 days grace before me issuing them with the summons.
What an utter shambles this whole thing has been. I would NEVER ever buy a Dell product again. The courier Western Walsh messed up and lost Dell the order in the first place by not meeting a delivery day, but then Dell compounded the situation by taking money I told them not to, and then being very evasive about refunding it.
My advice to prospective purchasers:
1. Don’t buy from Dell while they continue to use their useless courier.
2. Don’t be messed around by either of them. Give them written notice of cancellation if they don’t meet a delivery day, and give them written notice of a County Court summons if they are evasive about giving a refund.
3. We British take poor service for granted and in my opinion the companies take advantage of this. It’s time we stopped allowing them to do this as only then will the service we receive from them improve.
4. Buy a Sony laptop like I did from a high street retailer (they will negotiate a discount if you ask).
Good luck to you all.

I ordered a laptop from Dell last Thursday. By Friday it was built and in the Walsh Western delivery System over the weekend. On Monday I received an automated call saying it would be delivered on Tuesday and I had an option to take delivery am or pm (I selected am). The laptop arrived safe and sound at 11am as promised. At all times I was kept accurately (and promptly) in the picture as to the atatus of the delivery via the Dell link to the WW website.
an excellent service from WW and the laptop (XPS 1530) is pretty good too.

Tracking is supposed to take the irk out of much wanted goods. Instead it creates impatience and a lot of unreal expectations.

I am also having a nightmare experience awaiting the delivery of my Dell Laptop. Originally asigned for delivery 2 days ago I took the morning off work and waited home. Nothing arrived so I called Welsh Western and was told that it had been delivered to the wrong hub. A new delivery date was arranged for yesterday and it never appeared. A further call was made and an apology given however it was pointed out that the mistake had been made at the depot and not by the chap on the phone. A third date was arranged for this morning and once again nothing has arrived. The office is closed so I am not going to be able to contact them now until Monday. A disgraceful service and if it doesn’t arrive on Monday I will cancel my order and request a full refund.

I’ve also had the same problem this week. Original delivery day was Wednesday for which I took the afternoon off work; it never arrived and no indication that it was not going to turn up. I rearranged for this morning. They tried to deliver on Thursday (no-one home… yes, that’s why I requested Saturday.. - we’re working to earn the money to pay for this stuff, including delivery charges…) I called the depot Thursday evening to make sure it would be delivered today and phoned again twice this morning as I suspected the courier needed babysitting to make sure I didn’t have another wasted day. They assured me it was on its way, if potentially a little late. It hasn’t arrived. I’m livid. By the time I get it I suspect the technology will be obsolete and we’ll all be travelling in flying cars. I have complained via email to Dell and Walsh Western and requested a refund for the delivery charge. The courier, Business Post, seems to be most at fault but the responsibility must lie with Dell for selecting separate logistics and courier companies with god knows how many sub-contractors. It’s very difficult to find anyone who cares enough about the customer to bother to provide a decent service. Next time perhaps I will go to a nice actual shop where I can see the merchandise physically exists.

I’m fully aware of how the process works as a Dell VAR. It is Walsh Western that manage the process and their brand that represents the whole shipping process. Most of the time orders get stuck at the Walsh Western hub before they have gone out to the other couriers.

I bought this for personal use but usually buy a lot of servers through dell. It takes them less then 5 days to build a custom server and get it to my companies door step.
Just shows if you’re listed as a home user you get shafted. I’ll be looking at HP in future.

Was originally told delivery would be made before 8/05/08 (orderd 26/04/08). Checked on the Dell online system as to status of order few days ago and said had been passed to Walsh Western for delivery. Checked WW and said order is out for delivery today, as of 0921am having arrived at my local delivery hub as 0846am(for whichever courier WW has contracted out to fulfil the delivery). So am expecting to be able to have this redelivered to my work address either today or tomorrow hopefully. Will keep updating….not holding out much hope though having read some of the comments above about other peoples experiences….

I ordered a laptop from Dell on 23/04/08. I checked Dells site a few times a day and today and it has been built/tested and dispatched all in one day. Strange thing is, on Walsh Westerns web site at 9pm when i checked it, it said:
Date Time Location Activity
01/05/08 23:59 RAHEEN DEPARTED EMF.
It seems to have left 3 hours in advance.
This does not look like a good start, it’s like they just make things up in case Dell happen to check the progress of a package

UPDATE: Businesspost (contracted by Walsh Western, who are now called Syncreon after they merged with TDS Logistics)attempted delivery of my dell laptop yesterday afternoon, and they did leave a card to say this. Called the company when I got home in the evening to try and rearrange delivery to my work address (as I would be available to sign for the package in person etc, instead of missing the courier again when they attempted delivery to my home address again today), and they stated this was not allowed for some reason ? They said they could either redeliver to my home address again (useless as I am never in during the day) or I could collect from the depot, which is pretty annoying as it is pretty far away from me….and I have paid for delivery. I did ask Dell at the time of the order if it was possible to get the package redelivered to my business address if it turned out I missed the courier at home and they said this was no problem, but on speaking to the courier yesterday, they said it was under Dell’s instructions that “deliveries of consignments to addresses other than the orignal delivery address was strictly forbidden”. Oh well, guess I will get my new laptop sometime, off my own back though….

I got my order okay within the set timescale but the packing cases had large holes punched in them. I dare say they had been fairly roughly handled but there was no internal damage that I could see and the computer was NOT “dead on arrival.” I would say that Dell have realised that computers are not going to be spared rough handling and have prepared for it. One up to Dell; three down to Walsh Western. Better luck next time guys. At £60 for delivery, it is a rip-off. I used to moan at delivery charges of £20 (without the holes).

I ordered an inspiron a while ago, i was told that i could view the delivery process online. At somepoint the online screen says that it is basically up to walsh western to keep you informed of when the delivery is due. So i rang walsh western and they informed me that the delivery would be on the next day. I took a day off work to wait for it, but by 1:30pm i figured that the delivery wasn’t happening. I rang walsh western and i was told that the package was at the wrong hub and this would be put right so that the delivery could come on the next day (again). Again the same thing happened, i rang again and i was told that the delivery van had broken down and wouldn’t be able to deliver the inspiron today. Great so far. I was obviously told that the package would come on the next day (which is now a saturday - today). Earlier on i found out that walsh western don’t deliver on saturdays or sundays. This service is ridiculous. i don’t mind the wait, i figured there would be one. But it’s the lack of customer service, the feeling that the woman i spoke to didn’t even know herself what was going on so had to back it up with, well, lies. I thoroughly expected about a weeks or more wait which i wouldn’t of minded. I would just prefer to be told that than taking days off work for no reason. I don’t think i’ll be getting my package on monday, probably because it’ll be already all booked up, due to the act that mine was supposed to be delivered today. So here’s hoping for tuesday. Walsh Western could have at least the ability to say that the delivery may take a week.

Be very aware when ordering anything that has to be delivered by these couriers, this includes DELL products. 3 people from business post took my phone number and assured me that someone would call within an hour of arrival and that a PM delivery would most likely be late PM. After taking a half day off work I noticed at 5.30 on the tracking website that they attempted delivery at 12:00 noon though they left no calling card. Literally seconds after it be came a PM delivery. Avoid at all costs

Like you, I too have problems with this company. I was told my laptop would be delivered between 8am & 1pm today the 12th.I took the morning off work, which I couldnt really afford but they would not deliver to my place of work. After various phone calls & emails I was told by Dell that the driver had a problem before he left the depot. I tried phoning the depot but there was no answer. Eventually, after sending Dell a stinker of an email I had a phone call from the driver saying he hadnt delivered in Eastbourne before and didnt know it at all and did I still want them to deliver that day as they might be at least an hour. I told him “you bet your life I want it today”. He did not sound very happy as I think he probably thought he would get away with it. It is now 4.30pm and it looks as though I should get my laptop by 5.30ish, fingers crossed but from above comments I dont hold out much hope.

Then all of sudden its in Hinckley (15:17)

I’ve waited in all morning for a delivery agreed with someone at Syncreon on 22nd August after receiving a ‘failed delivery’ email which included the threat of returning the inspiron we’d ordered to Ireland with a charge of £20. Apparently they attempted to deliver the order on the 14th and 15th August and messages were left on the phone (none were received) and that cards were left both times (none were received). The Dell web site promised a link to the courier so that we could track our order (placed on 11th August) but no link ever appeared. We eventually found out that the courier was Syncreon when we rang to complain on the 22nd. When I then tried to access Syncreon’s order tracker, it didn’t recognise my account and order number and it was only when I googled this blog today that I found out that you have to put 02 in place of GB on the order number to gain access. Hooray, light in the darkness. There were the deliveries on the 14th and 15th, how much easier if we’d had access to this prior to the delivery!!! I’ve been on the phone to Ireland and India several times since 12 today and apparently, there’s a backlog because of the bank holiday (Ireland) and according to India, our order is stuck in heavy traffic, even though according to the Syncreon’s tracking site, it appears not to have left the depot. Thing is, Syncreon/Walsh Western were aware of the pending bank holiday when they promised delivery on 27th so why promise a delivery they couldn’t fulfil meaning I’ve lost ad day’s holiday and effectively racking up the cost of the order. It isn’t looking quite the bargain I thought it was. We are now about to cancel the order and wish to make an effective formal complaint. A previous emailed complaint was just forwarded by Dell to Syncreon and somehow I suspect that this will now have been filed in the Recycle bin. Any suggestions?

I’ve ordered goods from Dell before (both for home and for the company I work for) with generally no delivery problems. So at the beginning of last week I placed an order for one of their widescreen ultrasharp monitors. On previous occasions I have found their tracking system very good. Last Friday the system showed that this would be delivered am Wednesday 27th August. I took the day off work yesterday to await delivery - this did not happen so at 1.15 I checked the tracking system again and to my amazement it was stating that it had been delivered at 11.00 by what I assumed was a sub-contractor to Walsh Western by the name of Carrington. I had been in all morning and I know that no one had attempted delivery. I tried phoning Walsh Western and all I got after submitting my Dell order number was an automated message saying it had been delivered at 11.00. I then phoned Dell and they said they would get in contact with the courier who would contact me. I have wasted the whole of yesterday and still have not heard any news of when this might be delivered.
Marie said the following at August 28th, 2008 at 10:58 am :
Know how you feel Rod. Dell (Ireland) promised delivery between 8 and nine this morning and it didn’t arrive. When we checked on Walsh/Western tracker, it said they had attempted delivery and no one was at home so left a card. This is such nonsense, we were at home and had even left the front door open. Dell said that delivery had been attempted and that our house had a brown front door - information from the carrier I assume. We actually have a green front door! When Dell contacted the carrier again, it was to be told this time, that the goods were still in the warehouse. The carrier is BPO Newcastle so I rang direct and when I queried this morning’s ‘failed delivery’ on the WW’s tracker, they said this had been a mistake. The tracker now says the goods are on delivery. This is now two wasted days of our holiday.
The only mistake in this whole sorry saga is us ordering a Dell online. Never again.

I have the same sorry tale!
Received call (elctronic) asking delivery preference
so nominated am before 12 noon delivery on 28th August. According to Walsh Western tracking my Dell Laptop was passed on to Business Post Thames Valley which is in Thatcham. As Im only in Hungerford, this should be a no brainer, or so I thought! Now 5pm no sign of delivery, just called Business post in Thatcham to be told they themselves have sub contracted it out to a 1 man in a van type and surprise cant get a hold of this driver!
Dell really should get a grip of the deliveries, obviosly Walsh Western are not up to the task! and neither are Walsh Westerns sub contractors Business Post, who themselves contract out to operators (bet Dell dont know about that)

the delivery came safe and everything was on time (12.20 this afternoon) the packages were ok, so i guess i’m the one on a milion that had a good experience with them. Good luck guys!

Sorry to hear about all your bad experiences. I seem to be with the group that had a good experience.
I ordered a Dell studio laptop last Friday and got a call the following thursday morning asking if i wanted an am/pm delivery. I went for am (8am-1pm) and the laptop arrived at 12pm on the day.
Guess it’s a bit hit and miss with this company.
